ACE's S.T.E.P. program uses a curriculum especially designed to teach adolescent youth how to build and maintain businesses from the ground up. In year one the students are taught the fundamentals of starting a business. By the end of the Basic section, students will be able to prepare an income statement, understand marketing basics, perform other business related tasks. Students will also learn what it means to be an entrepreneur and how they can use their unique skills and talents to start a small business venture. At the conclusion of the term, students will be ready to apply the entrepreneurial concepts learned by completing a Basic Business Plan. Our vision is to create a culture of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinkers. Youth between the ages of 11 and 19 are instructed in the skills of entrepreneurship. Benefits to our students are increased academic, technology, business, and interpersonal skills.

November 20, 2011
Just three short years ago the students in the NC State pictures spent many hours preparing to take the NC State Fan Zone by storm. They had acquired numerous text book skills, they were dressed to impress -- they were ready. Yet the greatest, perhaps the most difficult lessons were yet to be learned --about taking risk and being able to manage the risk in spite of brutal odds and adverse conditons. Entreprenurship (small business ownership) is not for the faint of heart--that is for sure. That cold, overcast, windy, rainy November day (needless to say the weather did not cooperate) the small group of five S.T.E.P. members learned what perseverance really meant as they arranged and re-arranged (very often) their product, marketing materials, and ad posters every time the wind blew (literally). i observed their courage, their resilience, their team work as over and over again they explained to one diehard fan after another about the uniqueness of their product. The fact that it was not just the coolest, must have dressing that any self respecting NC State Fan should have adorning their ceiling fan--but that at the end of the day this licensed widget was connected to the education of a child. How awesome is it when an 11 year old gets it? I can tell you that was incredible to watch those five young people in acton --thinking, acting and responding like business owners. No, dispite the fact that there were thousands of NC fans on hand that day for the Wolf Pack vs Winston -Salem game, they did not sell out of their product in all honesty they did not come close to selling out but I was proud of them--and they had every right to be proud of themselves.
